The Big Match
July 5, 2012
The revised edition of my picture book The Big Match, published by Tango Books, is now out.
This version has a blow football game at the end, in place of the static electricity game of the original. I loved the magic of the static electricity device and the novelty aspect was enough for me, although some of the buyers and bookshops were confused about how the ‘game’ worked. Having said that, I’m also very happy with the blow football game as an alternative ending and it was also a good excuse for me to add a secret hidden container for the balls and straws.

This looks great fun – I love the ‘stand’ for the fans too. And thank you for showing us your latest idea at the writers’ group last Wednesday. I think it’s set to become a cult book. Meanwhile, we’re sworn to secrecy about the concept…..
Thanks, Alison, I’d love a cult book and yes please, secrecy…otherwise, I’ll have to hunt you down!
This book looks amazing John….and it heartens me to think that this could be a game of football that I might actually have a chance to play…and win!
It looks huge fun, John. I wish you’d do something for girls! I have a five-year-old granddaughter who’d love something like that.

It’s funny you should say that, as Tango Books has always promoted me as someone who does books for boys. I’d prefer to think that both boys and girls like my books. The title I’m working on at the moment for Tango doesn’t really fall into the category of a ‘boy’s book’, so maybe that’ll be the one for you granddaughter.
