I enjoyed your post. I have really happy memories of the first Petit Larousse Illustré that I bought. (I think I wrote about it once.) Right now I am so enjoying dipping into a brand new book that I received for Christmas. It is "Planet Word", by J.P. Davidson with a foreword by Stephen Fry.

Yesterday I published on out-of-print book "Nightingale News" on Kindle, so I am obviously also interested in e-books, but for some books a hard copy is impossible to replace.

Very interesting post, Joe.

I'm a real books person, myself. Like you, I love the serendipity of allowing a page to fall open and seeing what turns up. And usually something unexpected does catch the eye. I don't think one can get that online - at least, I've never managed to do so.

I'll certainly look out for this in April next year. My grandson identifies strongly with the Reds. (When he was very little - about 4 years old - he refused to wear a blue band, as he said "I support Liverpool and they are Red". He stuck to his guns and decided to watch on the sidelines instead of playing!) The book looks great.

Congratulations Alison! I do agree that the French cover and publicity really 'hit the spot". They give one a real frisson of anxiety, just as we felt when you read bits out in draft form to the group. It is a wonderful story. Good Luck with the prize! (I feel very tempted to pop over to Le Mans and be there at the Prize giving.. . .) Odette

I agree. I swiftly realized that most students didn't want to work too hard - they regarded it more as a holiday with a bit of added culture - and why not? A 'Creative Writing for Pleasure' course would allow them to have fun and, with luck, learn some new techniques without it being too onerous.

I'm hoping that my 'Week at Dillington' piece next year will have much more input from the students, leaving me to do a bit of light editing!
