John O’Leary
John O’Leary studied graphic design at the National College of Art & design, Dublin and printmaking at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino in Italy. He worked as a designer and illustrator for some years before becoming a full-time author/illustrator of picture books for young children.
John’s first book, Ten on a Train, was published by Frances Lincoln in 1995 and since then he has produced ten titles for novelty book publisher, Tango Books. Most of his books have an educational slant and regularly contain paper engineering which he designs personally in order to achieve a good match between pop-up and illustration.
The narrative of his stories is generally visually-led with the text playing a more incidental role. He hopes this makes his books more manageable for children who might be struggling with their reading.
John lives and works in London and is married with two children.
